Two puffins, named Danny and Arnie, have been successfully returned to the wild after being rescued during stormy weather. They were discovered stranded on beaches in Fife in January, following the severe impact of Storm Chandra. Danny was found in Anstruther and Arnie in St Andrews, both appearing weak and starving.
After their rescue, the puffins spent nearly three months at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross. Arnie was able to self-feed immediately upon arrival, but Danny required treatment for an infection and lost his appetite. Both birds underwent regular washing to assess their waterproofing, a common concern for rescued seabirds.
Last month, the two puffins were released together on the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth, an area renowned for its puffin colonies. They were transported halfway to the island and released onto the water, a measure taken to protect them from potential predators. This positive news contrasts with the thousands of seabirds that washed up dead across Europe earlier this year, a phenomenon known as a 'wreck'.
