4 Apr
Summary
- A 3-week-old abandoned mountain lion cub named Crimson was rescued.
- He received intensive around-the-clock care and medical evaluation.
- Crimson cannot be released and may join another rescued cub, Clover.

A three-week-old mountain lion cub, now named Crimson, is receiving critical care at Oakland Zoo after being found abandoned in Southern California. After extensive monitoring confirmed his mother was not returning, wildlife officials intervened.
Rescuers transported the cub to the Los Angeles Zoo on March 25 for an initial evaluation, where veterinarians noted he was missing toes on one paw. He was then flown to Oakland Zoo on March 27 for intensive veterinary care.
Currently bottle-fed every three hours, Crimson is in a delicate stage of growth. Because mountain lion cubs require extensive time with their mothers to learn survival skills, Crimson cannot be released into the wild. The zoo intends to eventually introduce him to another rescued cub named Clover.
