Energy Independence: Green Power Nations Lead
13 Mar
Summary
- Spain now generates enough renewable electricity for its entire demand.
- Norway sources 98% of its electricity from hydro and wind power.
- China leads globally in installing new solar and wind capacity.

Amidst escalating global fuel shortages, countries prioritizing renewable energy are demonstrating greater resilience. Spain has become a renewable energy frontrunner in Europe, with its power company confirming that renewables met the country's entire electricity demand last year. This achievement stems from significant investments in solar and wind power over the past decade, substantially reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Nordic nations are at the forefront of this transition, with Norway notably generating approximately 98% of its electricity from hydro and wind power. In Asia, China stands out for its energy self-sufficiency and rapid installation of renewable projects. The International Energy Agency forecasts that by the early 2030s, China's solar capacity alone will exceed the total current power consumption of the United States.
Other countries demonstrating exceptional commitment to renewables include Albania, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Iceland, Nepal, Paraguay, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These nations collectively produce over 99.7% of their electricity from sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy.
