Summary
- A young female red squirrel named Cinnamon arrived at a conservation site.
- The site aims to breed endangered native red squirrels.
- 15 baby squirrels, called kits, have been born since the program started in 2023.
A conservation site in North Yorkshire has welcomed a young female red squirrel, named Cinnamon, as part of its efforts to boost the population of the endangered native species. She has joined a two-year-old male, David Attenborough, at Castle Howard Arboretum.
The red squirrel breeding programme, which commenced in 2023, has already seen significant success. To date, 15 baby squirrels, known as kits, have been born at the arboretum. These young squirrels have subsequently been integrated into other breeding programmes and released into the wild in various locations across Wales.
Visitors to Castle Howard Arboretum can currently view David, the resident male squirrel, who arrived earlier this year. He is reported to be very active within his enclosure, providing an opportunity to observe the conservation work in action.
