Santa Barbara Zoo is mourning the loss of a second red panda cub, which died on July 27, just over three weeks after its birth. This cub was part of a twin set born on July 2 to parents Ruby and Raj, marking the first red panda births at the zoo since 1993. Sadly, the first cub passed away on July 21.
The second cub had been under continuous veterinary care since July 19, when it was removed from its mother's care and placed in an incubator. Despite efforts including tube and bottle feedings and antibiotics, the cub remained in critical condition. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
This series of losses highlights the vulnerability of this endangered species, which has a documented infant mortality rate of around 40%. Red pandas face significant threats in the wild, with a global population estimated at only 10,000 individuals. The zoo has reunited the mother, Ruby, with her mate, Raj, in their habitat.
