Texas Coast Sees Record Sea Turtle Strandings
15 Sep
Summary
- Record four sea turtle species stranded in one day.
- Kemp's ridley, loggerhead, green, and hawksbill turtles arrived.
- Potential link to ongoing red tide bloom investigated.

The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research in Galveston reported an unprecedented event over the weekend, admitting a record four different species of sea turtles on a single day. The stranded turtles included Kemp's ridley, loggerhead, green, and hawksbill species. This unusual cluster of strandings has prompted concerns and investigations into potential causes.
Researchers are currently examining whether an ongoing red tide bloom along the upper Texas coast might be a contributing factor. This algae concentration has already been linked to significant fish kills between Galveston and Crystal Beach. While the connection to the sea turtle strandings is not yet confirmed, it remains a primary focus.
The center, affiliated with Texas A&M University, collaborates with state and federal agencies to conserve sea turtles in Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. They are providing veterinary care to the affected turtles with support from the Houston Zoo, following a successful joint effort earlier this year to rehabilitate 100 turtles after a January freeze.
