Volusia County's 2026 sea turtle nesting season has commenced with an unprecedented number of nests recorded early on. By June 11, authorities documented 695 nests, a figure that surpasses all previous early-season records.
This season's count is considerably higher than last year's, which was also a record-breaking year. By the same date in 2023, only 444 nests had been observed. The nesting season, which spans from May 1 to October 31, typically sees increased activity throughout the summer months.
Adding to the significance of this season, officials have identified five nests from the Kemp's ridley sea turtle, a species recognized as the rarest and most endangered globally. The first sea turtle hatchlings are anticipated to emerge later this month.
Conservation efforts are underway, with staff and partners monitoring and safeguarding nesting grounds. Public awareness campaigns aim to educate residents and visitors on minimizing disturbances. Key recommendations include avoiding nesting areas, reducing light pollution, removing beach equipment, filling in holes, and respecting designated conservation zones.
