Record Painted Ladies Descend on Britain
5 Jun
Summary
- Millions of painted lady butterflies have arrived in Britain.
- This is the largest arrival seen in 17 years.
- Heatwaves and favorable winds enabled this mass migration.

Britain is currently witnessing an unprecedented arrival of painted lady butterflies, marking the largest migration in 17 years. These insects, which travel north annually from sub-Saharan Africa, have been ushered towards the UK by a combination of favorable early spring conditions in southern Europe, a recent heatwave, and gentle southerly winds. Large numbers have been observed along the east coast and are expected to bring vibrant color to the summer months.
The painted lady's life cycle is rapid, with warm weather allowing them to develop from egg to adult in as little as four to six weeks. This facilitates the swift emergence of large broods. These butterflies are beneficial to gardeners and farmers as their caterpillars consume thistles. Experts anticipate a significant British-born generation emerging within five to six weeks.
This mass immigration is particularly timely, potentially boosting participation in the world's largest citizen science insect count in July. The painted lady's prominent presence might also influence Butterfly Conservation's poll to determine Britain's favorite butterfly, possibly challenging the peacock butterfly for the top spot. Other rare moth species, like the eastern bordered straw and striped hawkmoths, have also been sighted.
