In a concerning development, four Lesser Adjutant Storks have been found dead near their nesting grounds in the Loharghat range of Kamrup West forest division in Assam over the last two months. This species is recognized as 'near threatened' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), making these losses particularly significant.

Forest department officials confirmed the staggered discovery of the carcasses. The first incident was reported in December, followed by another recovery approximately 15 days ago. Most recently, two more bird carcasses were found last Saturday. All the deceased birds were located in close proximity to their established nesting sites in Maniyari Tiniali and Khatiamari.

Nayan Jyoti Das, the range officer, stated that the carcasses were recovered from two distinct locations. While the exact cause of death is under investigation, officials are considering possibilities such as extreme cold weather conditions or the birds falling from their nests during their initial attempts at flight. Further analysis is expected to shed light on this unfortunate situation.
