Rare Mountain Lions Spotted on Trail Cam

An animal enthusiast in Western Montana received a delightful surprise when their trail camera captured footage of mountain lions, animals previously unseen in the area. The video initially shows one mountain lion moving through dense shrubbery, followed shortly by a second. These large cats, also known as cougars or pumas, are typically solitary creatures.

Historically, mountain lions ranged across the entire United States, but their presence is now confined to 15 western states. While occasional wanderings to the East Coast have been noted, the eastern cougar subspecies was declared extinct in 2011. Despite not being listed as threatened, their population has significantly declined from historic levels due to factors like trophy hunting, livestock conflicts, and habitat loss.

As habitats shrink, mountain lions are increasingly observed in unexpected locations, including urban areas, as they search for food and new territories. Trail camera technology provides a valuable and safe method for observing these elusive animals in their natural environment, contributing essential data for conservation efforts regarding their behavior, population numbers, and range.
