Elusive Florida Panthers Captured on Camera in Rare Footage

As of 2025-11-04T00:24:05+00:00, the Florida panther remains the most iconic mammal in the Sunshine State. This apex predator, which was selected as the state's official animal by school-aged students in 1982, has long been a mysterious and elusive creature.

In recent years, however, biologists, photographers, and citizen scientists have been able to better document the Florida panther's behavior and movements. Using game cameras, they have captured rare footage of these 166-pound felines roaming the state's vast preserves, both during the day and at night, when their eyes glow in the reflection of the camera flash.

Despite these efforts, the future of the Florida panther remains uncertain. Proposed developments in rural Lee and Collier counties, including several new towns along the Corkscrew Road and in the Immokalee area, threaten to encroach on the panther's crucial habitat and travel corridors. Panther advocates warn that these developments could have a devastating impact on the species, which is already confined to a small portion of its historic range.

The heart of the Florida panther's breeding population is in the Big Cypress National Preserve, a 730,000-acre protected area in eastern Collier County. However, the long-term goal is to establish a second population in central Florida, which would help ensure the species' survival. As of 2025-11-04T00:24:05+00:00, no plans have been proposed to introduce panthers to this region or another state.
