The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is spearheading an ecotourism development project on Rameswaram Island, designed to create local livelihoods while safeguarding the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. A consultant is being appointed to prepare a Detailed Project Report under the World Bank-assisted TN-SHORE project.
This initiative will leverage the existing network of 252 Eco Development Committees and 2,550 self-help groups. The goal is to harness responsible ecotourism, strengthen community-managed infrastructure, and generate employment for local youth.
Proposed infrastructure includes a Mangrove Nature Park at Kunthukal with an orientation center and mangrove walkway. At Dhanushkodi, a marine bird interpretation center and observation platform are planned.
The project also focuses on training local youth as eco-guides, lifeguards, and scuba diving professionals, thereby enhancing the region's blue economy potential and marine ecosystem awareness.
