7 Jan
Summary
- 135 bird species, including 33 migratory, found in Rajgir hills.
- Eurasian Sparrowhawk sighted, marking its first appearance in Nalanda.
- Healthy habitats boost bird diversity, attracting species from afar.

Rajgir hills and its wildlife areas in Bihar are experiencing a surge in avian visitors, with a December 2025 survey revealing 135 species, including 33 migratory birds. This marks a significant increase from earlier findings, underscoring the region's growing importance as a bird sanctuary.
Recent surveys conducted in February and December 2025 by the Environment, Forest and Climate Change department documented this rich biodiversity. Notably, the Eurasian Sparrowhawk was sighted in Nalanda district for the first time, confirming Rajgir's position on international migratory routes stretching from Europe and Central Asia.
The thriving insect population and healthy habitats, bolstered by conservation efforts like increased water levels in reservoirs, create an ideal environment. This ecological richness not only supports resident birds but also makes Rajgir Zoo Safari a crucial winter refuge for a wide array of migratory species.
