Rajasthan is pioneering a bird-safe power zone at the Keru Dumping Yard, recognized as a significant winter refuge for migratory vultures and raptors. Jodhpur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (JVVNL) has initiated a project to retrofit hazardous high-voltage electricity infrastructure surrounding the site. This first-of-its-kind effort in Rajasthan focuses on insulating conductors and redesigning power poles to safeguard avian life.
The project addresses electrocution and collision risks for birds, particularly large soaring species like vultures and eagles. Keru Dumping Yard has emerged as a crucial winter feeding ground, drawing thousands of birds from Central Asia. Threatened species such as the Egyptian Vulture and Steppe Eagle regularly visit the site.
