Rajasthan Crops Wilt: Monsoon Failure Hits Bajra, Guar Output
16 Oct
Summary
- Deficient monsoon rainfall in Rajasthan to reduce kharif crop production.
- Bajra and guar output projected to decline significantly in the 2026 season.
- Groundnut production may see a slight increase compared to the previous year.

Kharif crop production in Rajasthan is set to decrease in the 2026 season due to insufficient monsoon rainfall. Official estimates indicate a decline in bajra (pearl millet) and guar (cluster bean) output. Bajra sowing has reduced to 3.958 million hectares, with an expected production of 4.939 million tonnes, down from the previous year's 5.373 million tonnes.
Moong (green gram) sowing remains stable, with a projected output of 1.44 million tonnes from 2.382 million hectares. In contrast, groundnut production is anticipated to rise, with an estimated 2.821 million tonnes from 1.185 million hectares, an improvement from the previous year's 2.123 million tonnes.
Guar, a significant crop for western Rajasthan, faces a substantial reduction in output due to negligible rainfall in the region. This has already led to an early surge in guar prices. The agriculture sector, contributing 27% to Rajasthan's GDP, is targeted for growth through new schemes, including AI initiatives.
