Disused Hut Becomes Bat Sanctuary
27 Oct
Summary
- Disused railway fogging hut converted into a bat shelter.
- Whiskered bat discovered hibernating in the derelict structure.
- Hut modified to provide stable temperature and humidity for bats.
An old railway fogging hut, a structure nearly 200 years old, has been repurposed as a bat shelter. This conversion utilizes a piece of railway heritage, turning it into a secure hibernaculum for bats. National Highways, responsible for the site, anticipates this will boost the local bat population.
A whiskered bat was found hibernating in the neglected hut during an ecological survey in autumn 2024. The structure, then covered in graffiti and exposed to the elements, was identified for adaptation. Following tunnel repairs completed under a bat license, modifications were made.
The hut's chimney was removed and the roof sealed to ensure stable temperatures and humidity. A small, secure entrance was created, allowing bat access while excluding people and predators. Inside, clear corrugated sheeting was added to offer roosting spots for crevice-dwelling bats and allow for future monitoring by ecologists.
