Radioactive Brook Near UK Plant: Parents Demand Warning Signs
3 Oct
Summary
- Brook sediment contains radioactive materials like tritium and uranium.
- Local families and experts call for warning signs near the stream.
- Urenco's Capenhurst plant is the UK's radiation hotspot, officials say.

Rivacre Brook, a popular waterway near Ellesmere Port, has become a focal point for radiation concerns following a report identifying the nearby Urenco Capenhurst nuclear plant as the UK's radiation hotspot. Scientists detected radioactive materials, including tritium, uranium, and technetium-99, in the brook's sediment and freshwater.
Despite official assurances that radiation levels are within safety limits, local residents and Professor Patrick Byrne of Liverpool John Moores University are advocating for warning signs. They highlight that children and pets have been observed playing in and drinking from the brook, particularly in warmer weather when play areas are nearby. Concerns linger about the potential long-term health implications of exposure.
The latest RIFE report, published in October 2025 and detailing 2024 radiation levels, stated that Capenhurst recorded doses around a quarter of the UK National Limit. The dose for children playing in the area was measured at 0.007mSv in 2024, an increase from the previous year. Urenco UK maintains it operates in compliance with its permits, and the Environment Agency confirms that concentrations in the brook remain very low and within limits.
However, the presence of these radionuclides in the brook has fueled public worry in Ellesmere Port. Parents express shock that discharges are permitted, fearing potential side effects for their children who may have played in the water. The community seeks greater awareness and precautionary measures to protect younger generations from any associated risks.
