20 May
Summary
- First rabies case this year confirmed in a bat.
- Rabid bat found near Adriel Hills, northeast of Fort Collins.
- Health officials warn rabies is deadly once symptoms appear.

Northern Colorado has reported its first rabies case of the year, identified in a bat. The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment confirmed the positive rabies test. The infected bat was located in an open space area near the Adriel Hills neighborhood, northeast of Fort Collins, and has since been captured.
Authorities have stated that no humans were exposed to the bat. Rabies is a serious disease transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly through bites. The health department warns that rabies is nearly always deadly once symptoms appear, underscoring the importance of prompt medical attention for anyone potentially exposed.
Wildlife throughout Larimer County can carry rabies, according to Bob McDonald, Environmental Health Director. He advises residents to avoid touching any wild animals, including bats, skunks, and raccoons. If a person or pet is believed to have been exposed to a potentially rabid animal, the public is urged to contact public health or animal control immediately.
