Qinghai's Red Lines Protect 42% of Land
22 Jul
Summary
- Ecological red lines cover over 42% of Qinghai's land.
- Qinghai leads in revoking mining rights from nature reserves.
- A new digital platform aids proactive environmental impact assessment.

Qinghai province has established a robust territorial spatial planning system aimed at harmonizing ecological preservation with economic growth. This initiative designates over 42% of the province's landmass as ecological protection red lines, a significant portion nationally. The planning framework operates across provincial, prefecture, and county levels, supported by detailed township and village plans.
Reinforcing its commitment, Qinghai has become the first province to withdraw all mining rights from its nature reserves. This includes 85 mining rights within the Sanjiangyuan and Qilian Mountain nature reserves. Future mining projects are now restricted in protected zones.
The province is also adopting a forward-thinking approach by developing a digital platform for pre-project environmental impact assessments. This proactive strategy aims to identify and mitigate potential conflicts before projects commence, ensuring development aligns with ecological integrity.
