Summary
- Nile monitor lizards pose a significant threat to native species.
- These invasive reptiles can grow up to seven-and-a-half feet long.
- Burrows dug by these lizards can cause millions in infrastructure damage.

YouTube personality Matt Kimmel, widely recognized as the "Python Cowboy," has embarked on a mission to confront Nile monitor lizards, a growing invasive species problem in South Florida. These large reptiles, capable of reaching seven-and-a-half feet in length, are proving to be a formidable challenge for Kimmel and his crew.
As apex predators, Nile monitors pose a serious threat to numerous federally and state-listed species, including sea turtles and crocodiles. Their extensive burrowing activities also present a significant risk to infrastructure, with potential damage costs running into the millions.
In a recent video, Kimmel's team, aided by trained dogs, demonstrated their effectiveness in capturing invasive green iguanas. While they did not succeed in capturing a Nile monitor during that specific outing, their proficiency suggests that success is likely inevitable. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is also actively involved, offering an Amnesty Program for owners wishing to surrender these exotic pets.
