Puri Airport Cleared Amidst Bird Hazard Concerns
8 Oct
Summary
- New airport in Puri gets environmental clearance.
- Migratory birds from Chilika Lake pose flight risks.
- A bird hazard study is mandated before airport operations.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has approved the development of the Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri, Odisha. Environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone Clearances were granted for the 471.348-hectare site near Sipasarubali village.
This clearance comes despite a study by the Wildlife Institute of India identifying a risk posed by migratory birds from Chilika Lake, a Ramsar Site. The proximity of the airport to this wetland of international importance necessitates a thorough investigation into potential bird strikes.
As a mandatory condition for the airport's approval, the project proponent must commission a bird hazard study from a recognized institution. The findings of this study, along with proposed mitigation measures for safeguarding migratory birds and their habitats, must be submitted to the Ministry.
Environmental protection measures are crucial, and the selection of plantation species around the airport site will be carefully managed to avoid attracting birds and to enhance pollution and noise control. Additionally, consultation with the Odisha Forest Department is required for shoreline protection measures, ensuring that tree plantation aligns with the regional marine ecosystem.
