After a nearly 10-day hiatus, the southwest monsoon is poised for a robust return to Punjab beginning Sunday, July 19. This resurgence promises widespread rainfall and crucial relief for farmers who have been contending with a substantial rain deficit and oppressive heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a gradual intensification of rainfall activity from July 19, with widespread showers expected between July 20 and July 22. A yellow alert has been issued for isolated areas, warning of heavy rainfall that could cause temporary waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
This revival is timely, as Punjab has experienced a significant rainfall deficit. Between June 1 and July 17, the state received only 80.1 mm of rain, a 38% shortfall compared to the normal 140.7 mm. This dry spell has exacerbated the effects of high temperatures, with cities like Bathinda recording 41.2 degrees Celsius.
The anticipated monsoon activity is attributed to favorable weather systems, including the monsoon trough and an upper-air cyclonic circulation. These conditions are expected to significantly boost monsoon activity over the region in the coming week, benefiting the ongoing paddy transplantation season by improving soil moisture and reducing irrigation needs. Residents are advised to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall.
