2 Apr
Summary
- QR codes will provide eco-friendly crematorium facility details.
- Over 51% of monthly cremations already use eco-friendly methods.
- Eco-friendly cremations significantly reduce emissions and carbon footprint.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a new QR code system to improve access to eco-friendly crematoriums. These codes, to be displayed at 54 hospitals and 19 maternity homes, will provide information on crematoriums offering electric or gas-based facilities. The civic body operates 75 crematoriums, with 21 already equipped for eco-friendly services. Approximately 3,500 to 4,000 cremations occur monthly, with over 51% currently using greener methods.
Traditional wood-based cremations contribute significantly to air pollution and associated health issues. In contrast, electric and gas cremation methods drastically cut emissions, lower carbon footprints, and are completed within two to three hours. This initiative, implemented under the National Clean Air Programme and the 'LIFE' campaign, aims to reduce pressure on congested cremation grounds like Vaikunth and mitigate pollution in surrounding areas. Pamphlets are also being distributed through private hospitals to raise awareness among citizens about these environmentally responsible options.
