Pune's Garbage Crisis: Waste Piles Up as Festive Season Looms

Pune is currently facing a critical garbage collection problem, with waste accumulating in numerous spots across the city over the past few days. Residents have voiced their frustration regarding unattended trash, a situation exacerbated by recent rainfall. The civic administration has announced plans to acquire at least 250 new vehicles by next month to enhance the city's garbage lifting capacity.

Elected representatives are urging the administration to expedite the deployment of these new vehicles, particularly before the Ganeshotsav festival, a period known for increased waste generation. Corporators have repeatedly highlighted the improper garbage management issues in general body meetings. The city generates approximately 2,200 metric tons of waste daily, with an expected rise of 50 to 100 metric tons during Ganeshotsav.

Adding to the challenge, the administration is also dealing with protests from residents in Phursungi and Uruli Devachi against new waste processing plants in their areas. A solid waste management department official confirmed that 250 vehicles and 30 compactors will be added to the existing fleet of over 375 vehicles and 750 ghantagadis.
