Pune Dust Crisis: RMC Plants Choke Bavdhan
6 Mar
Summary
- RMC plants in Bavdhan allegedly causing severe dust pollution.
- Private air quality apps show hazardous AQI levels, often over 300.
- Residents threaten National Green Tribunal action if dust persists.

Residents in Pune's Bavdhan neighborhood are once again voicing serious concerns about dust pollution, primarily attributing the issue to multiple Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plants operating in the vicinity. Despite prior discussions and assurances from plant representatives, the persistent dust emissions continue to degrade the local air quality and impact daily life.
Although Bavdhan lacks an official air quality monitoring station, local citizens report that private monitoring applications often register Air Quality Index (AQI) readings between 300 and 400, indicating hazardous pollution levels. The issue has been ongoing for over a year, with seven commercial RMC plants identified as major contributors to the dust generated from raw material handling and operations.
A public hearing was conducted on February 13, during which the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board directed RMC operators to implement dust-control measures within 25 days. However, residents claim that tangible improvements have not been observed since the hearing. Consequently, citizens are contemplating further action by approaching the National Green Tribunal if the pollution levels do not decrease significantly.
