Pune Chokes on Construction Dust: A Silent Killer
23 Feb
Summary
- Construction dust is a growing concern, impacting everyone's health.
- Ready-mix concrete plants contribute significantly to poor air quality.
- Residents face respiratory issues due to unchecked building activities.

Air quality in Pune has significantly deteriorated, with construction dust emerging as a major threat. Residents in areas like Bavdhan, Wakad, and Hinjewadi report difficulty breathing due to unchecked construction and numerous ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants. Simple measures like covering construction materials and washing vehicle tires are often ignored, contributing to visible dust pollution.
In December 2025, Pimpri Chinchwad recorded the highest air quality index (AQI) in Maharashtra, largely attributed to construction sites violating dust-control norms. Despite resident complaints and RTI applications revealing a higher number of illegal RMC plants than official records suggest, authorities have been slow to act. This ongoing neglect impacts citizens' health and quality of life.
Concerns have been raised with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) regarding non-compliance with environmental guidelines. While MPCB can issue closure notices and arrange for power disconnection, enforcement is hampered by staff shortages and procedural hurdles. Environmental lawyers suggest approaching the National Green Tribunal for effective recourse against persistent violations.
