Puducherry Bird Atlas: 43,000 birds, 158 species mapped
14 Oct
Summary
- Over 43,000 birds from 158 species were recorded in Puducherry.
- Rare European Roller and other migratory birds were sighted.
- Seasonal data will establish a baseline for future bird monitoring.

The fourth Puducherry Bird Atlas, a bird-mapping initiative within the PVAC bioregion, has concluded, recording over 43,000 birds from 158 species. Organized by Svarnim, the survey engaged 54 participants, including students and volunteers, who covered 68 grids.
This exercise, following three previous rounds, aims to create a seasonal picture of bird distribution and abundance. This data will serve as a crucial baseline for monitoring changes in bird populations in the years to come.
Notable sightings included two European Rollers, a species that breeds in Europe and is a passage migrant through the Indian subcontinent. Other significant records featured the Lesser Frigatebird and various wetland-associated species.
The collected data will be synthesized into a report to recommend conservation strategies for important bird habitats, such as the Oussudu and Bahour wetland systems.
Future plans include repeating this grid-based, four-season protocol annually to track long-term changes in bird distribution and seasonal occurrence across the PVAC region.
