High E. coli Levels Restrict Swimming at Presque Isle

Presque Isle State Park is monitoring water quality closely due to rising E. coli levels. When E. coli, an indicator of sewage or animal waste, reaches specific thresholds, park officials implement swimming restrictions or issue advisories to protect public health. These precautions are crucial, as contaminated water can lead to skin infections and gastrointestinal issues, particularly for vulnerable groups like children.

Water samples are tested daily to determine E. coli concentrations. A swimming advisory is declared when levels range from 235 to 999 E. coli particles per 100 milliliters. More stringent restrictions are imposed if samples detect 1,000 or more particles per 100ml. These tests will continue until the water quality improves and the advisories are rescinded. While swimming may be prohibited, visitors can still enjoy other beach activities such as sunbathing.
