Prayagraj is set to embark on an ambitious afforestation drive, targeting the plantation of 72 lakh saplings commencing on Environment Day, June 5. This initiative is a key component of Uttar Pradesh's broader goal to transform into a 'Harit Pradesh' (Green State).
The campaign includes planting 15,000 saplings along the Ganga Expressway and over 24,000 along river banks. To ensure success, the government has digitized the monitoring process, utilizing platforms like the 'Haritima' app, GIS mapping, and QR code-based tracking to assess green cover and improve sapling survival rates.
This year's drive aims to foster mass participation through programs such as 'One Tree in Mother's Name,' encouraging sapling plantation at anganwadi centers and by students. The 'One Route, One Species' theme will also guide plantation efforts in the city.
Arvind Kumar, divisional forest officer, highlighted the department's commitment to sapling protection, noting an impressive 98 percent survival rate in the region based on consolidated reports from 24 government departments. Plantation activities are planned across 35,158 sites, covering 4,478 hectares, with over 10 million saplings available in district nurseries.
