Poynton Pool Accord: Trees Saved in Reservoir Safety Deal
6 Jul
Summary
- Poynton Pool, a reservoir since 1750, requires safety works.
- A new plan avoids most trees, a result of joint work.
- Council's prior tree removal plan was refused planning permission.

Campaigners and Cheshire East Council have reached an agreement regarding safety works at Poynton Pool, a site historically significant since 1750 and legally classified as a reservoir. For years, environmental groups protested against plans to remove trees around the ornamental pond.
A new proposal has been developed in collaboration with the Friends of Poynton Pool, designed to minimize tree removal by following the existing footpath. This joint effort signifies a "preferred way forward" with relatively minor engineering works.
Cheshire East Council's initial proposal in 2023 to remove trees from the reservoir sparked significant public demonstrations. However, the strategic planning board refused planning permission for the scheme in January, citing a directive from the housing secretary.
Following this refusal, the council, Friends of Poynton Pool, and Poynton Town Council have issued a joint statement. They are now working together to detail plans for consultation with the Environment Agency and to establish a timetable for the upcoming works, which will be preceded by further survey work starting next month.
