BMC Halts Sewage Flow to Powai Lake
30 Sep
Summary
- 20 sewage flows into Powai Lake have been intercepted and diverted.
- Sewage discharge into the lake will completely stop from Thursday.
- A new 8 MLD sewage treatment plant is being built for the lake.
Mumbai's Powai Lake will no longer receive sewage as the BMC has completed a major interception project. This initiative involved stopping 20 sewage flows that previously entered the lake.
Work included laying 3,056 meters of new sewer lines to divert sewage to treatment plants. Eighteen outfalls along Adi Shankaracharya Marg and two at Perugate have been addressed. Treated water from a new 8 MLD plant, set for completion by May 2027, will be released back into the lake.
Beyond sewage, the BMC is actively removing water hyacinth, having cleared over 20,340 metric tonnes. Stopping sewage inflow is expected to curb the spread of this invasive plant, further improving the lake's health.
