Portugal is bracing for Storm Leonardo, a new weather system predicted to impact the mainland from Tuesday afternoon through Saturday. This follows a series of intense storms that have affected the Iberian Peninsula in recent months.
Authorities are warning of potential floods and further devastation, especially in regions already impacted by the recent Storm Kristin. Kristin, which occurred last Wednesday, resulted in at least six fatalities and extensive damage to homes, factories, and infrastructure.
As of Monday, power outages continued to affect nearly 134,000 households, with around 95,000 in the central Leiria region still without electricity. Storm Leonardo is expected to bring persistent rain and wind gusts up to 75 km/h on the coast and 95 km/h in the highlands.
