Natural features like dunes, such as the 'Reduna' project in Almada, proved effective in mitigating damage, preventing worse outcomes for beaches and nearby urban areas. The APA has committed to artificial beach nourishment, a process described as essential for sediment accumulation and coastal safety. This investment plan includes repairing infrastructure, reinforcing dunes, stabilizing cliffs, and restoring walkways. Beach retreat is a long-term issue influenced by rising sea levels, extreme weather, dam construction retaining sediment, sand extraction, and dune degradation. Experts emphasize that while rigid structures protect urban areas, they can increase erosion elsewhere.
