Portobello Beach Closed: Pollution Fears Grip Edinburgh
15 Jun
Summary
- High bacteria levels found on Thursday, prompting closure.
- Lifesaving club criticizes delayed response to pollution.
- Sepa investigates cause and will reopen when water is safe.

Portobello Beach in Edinburgh has been closed due to a pollution incident, with the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) advising against bathing and paddling. Routine water testing on Thursday revealed high bacteria levels, prompting an investigation into the potential human health risks. More water samples are being collected to assess the extent of the contamination.
The closure has caused significant disruption for the Porty Surf Lifesaving Club, which offers water activities and lifesaving skills training. Alec Martin from the club voiced frustration, stating it is "not good enough" for the beach to remain closed for days. He emphasized the importance of Portobello as a designated bathing water and the need for prompt action to address pollution issues.
Sepa confirmed that bathing was advised against at Portobello for 11 days last year. Officers are actively investigating the source of the current high bacteria count and will implement mitigation measures if necessary. The advisory against bathing will persist until Sepa is confident that water quality at Portobello Central has returned to safe levels.
