Researchers in north-western Australia are repurposing discarded plastic piping into artificial dens to aid the recovery of the northern quoll, a critically endangered marsupial. This initiative, detailed in a recent study, involves converting industrial waste into vital shelters at former mining sites. The aim is to provide refuge from extreme temperatures and humidity, crucial for the survival of these small carnivorous marsupials.
The experimental approach utilizes high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, readily available at mine sites, buried within waste-rock piles. These artificial dens offer a thermal buffer, maintaining average maximum temperatures around 33.6°C and humidity near 62%, conditions similar to natural quoll shelters. This method presents a cost-effective tool for habitat restoration after mining operations.
Initial trials, supported by remote camera footage and tracking pads, indicate that northern quolls are exploring and entering the buried pipes. However, researchers emphasize that there is no definitive evidence yet of these dens being used as permanent homes or for successful breeding. Further replicated experiments are necessary to optimize den design and placement.
While artificial dens alone cannot solve the quoll's conservation challenges, which include predation, invasive species, and habitat loss, this project demonstrates a practical way to actively recreate essential wildlife shelters in post-mining landscapes. The initiative highlights a potential dual benefit: mitigating environmental impact and actively contributing to ecological recovery.
