Whale Pod Loyalty: A Fatal Flaw?
6 Mar
Summary
- Pilot whales died due to loyalty to a female in difficult birth.
- Social cohesion led whales into shallow waters, causing stranding.
- Strandings in Scottish waters have increased by 300% in 30 years.

In 2023, 55 pilot whales met a tragic end on the Isle of Lewis, their deaths attributed to the species' strong social bonds. Scientists believe the pod followed a female experiencing a prolonged and difficult birth into the shallow waters of Tràigh Mhòr beach. This behavior, typically a protective response to a distressed member, led them into an "acoustic trap" where echolocation signals were diminished, preventing their escape.
The report by the Scottish government's Marine Directorate highlighted a convergence of biological, behavioral, and environmental factors. While the whales were healthy, their social cohesion proved fatal in the shallow bathymetry. This investigation is also crucial for understanding a later stranding of 77 pilot whales in Orkney.
Mass strandings of whales and dolphins in Scottish waters have escalated significantly, increasing by up to 300% over the past three decades. Current findings suggest human-created sound is not a direct cause, though similar strandings of sperm whales elsewhere have raised concerns about industrial noise impacting deep-diving species.
