Activists Sue Over Pharma Park's Green Clearance
26 Feb
Summary
- Environmental clearance for a pharma park is challenged in NGT.
- Allegations include tree felling before approval and risk assessments.
- Construction activities requested to be stayed by petitioner.

An environmental activist has lodged an appeal with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) contesting the Union ministry's environmental clearance for a Bulk Drug Park in Una district, Himachal Pradesh. The project, intended to be a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub, is being developed over 568 hectares. The appeal, filed by Rohit Singh, cites significant environmental violations occurring even before the clearance was granted.
Concerns raised include extensive terrain alteration, such as tree felling and land levelling, alongside potential landslide, drainage, and erosion risks flagged by an Expert Appraisal Committee. The petition highlights that scientific studies were absent from the Environmental Impact Assessment and public hearings. Furthermore, it asserts that mandatory risk assessments for 59 listed hazardous chemicals were not conducted, contravening the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules.
