Forever Chemicals Spark Health Fears Near Old ICI Site
25 May
Summary
- Residents near former ICI site may get blood tests for PFAS chemicals.
- Seven homes identified as high risk due to chemical contamination.
- Council and NHS will not fund tests; legal experts may arrange them.

Residents living close to a former industrial site in Lancashire are raising concerns over potential contamination from "forever chemicals," specifically PFAS. Legal experts are now suggesting that blood tests may be offered to those residing near the former ICI plant in Thornton Cleveleys. Investigations have identified seven homes as being at high risk due to the chemicals.
Wyre Council and the National Health Service have indicated they will not fund the necessary blood tests. However, law firm Leigh Day, representing over 60 concerned residents, is exploring the possibility of arranging these tests independently for a limited number of individuals.
PFAS, once common in everyday products, has been largely banned since 2020 due to environmental and health concerns. AGC Chemicals Europe, which operates part of the former ICI site, ceased using PFAS in 2012 and states its priority is community support. The Environment Agency continues to monitor the surrounding area for contamination. Wyre Council stated it lacks the legal remit and expertise for such health matters, directing inquiries to the UK Health Security Agency and Lancashire County Council.
