Peacocks Found Thriving in Snow Near Manali
4 Feb
Summary
- Two peacocks spotted in snow-covered forests over 6000 ft altitude.
- Warming temperatures are suspected reason for unusual habitat.
- Similar sightings of other birds at higher altitudes noted.

A pair of peacocks has been sighted in a snow-covered forest in Jagatsukh village, situated at an altitude of over 6000 feet near Manali. This rare occurrence has become a sensation, as peacocks are commonly found in warmer climates.
Local forest officials suggest that a rise in average temperatures might be the reason behind this unusual sighting. They note that higher regions in Kullu and Manali are experiencing warmer weather than in previous decades, potentially making these areas habitable for peacocks.
This sighting is not entirely isolated, as other species like the red jungle fowl have also been observed at higher altitudes than usual. Himachal Pradesh has recorded a significant rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius in its average mean temperature since 1901, indicating a warming trend.
