Ghaziabad Birds Die: Pesticide Poisoning Feared
25 Feb
Summary
- Eleven peacocks found dead in Ghaziabad fields.
- Foam around beaks suggests toxic substance ingestion.
- Pesticide misuse raises concerns for wildlife and humans.

Eleven peacocks, comprising six males and five females, were found deceased in agricultural fields in Pyachara village, Loni, on Monday. Officials suspect that the birds ingested toxic substances, possibly phosphate-based pesticides commonly used in farming, as indicated by foam around their beaks. The carcasses and viscera samples have been sent for post-mortem and forensic analysis to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The incident has raised significant concerns among residents of Ghaziabad and surrounding areas regarding potential public health risks beyond the loss of wildlife. Forest officials have ruled out foul play, with preliminary inquiries suggesting that the peacocks may have consumed water contaminated with sprayed chemicals in a nearby field. This event underscores the serious issue of pesticide misuse in agricultural regions.
Authorities are emphasizing the dangers of exceeding Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides, which can lead to bioaccumulation and biomagnification, posing long-term health risks such as cancer, cardiovascular issues, and neurological disorders. The proposed Pesticides Management Bill, 2025, aims to address these concerns by enhancing regulations, traceability, and penalties for pesticide-related violations.
