Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna has initiated comprehensive heatwave mitigation strategies for its wildlife and visitors. The zoo has installed 17 coolers and 53 fans in night houses to benefit carnivores, bears, and primates. Reptiles are kept cool with 11 air conditioning units, while mist foggers and sprinklers provide evaporative cooling for birds and deer.
Water management is a priority, with repaired borewells ensuring continuous cold water supply for elephants and additional moats for rhinos. Dietary changes are crucial, with reduced food for carnivores and enhanced administration of glucose, multivitamins, and hydration solutions for all animals. Juicy fruits and cooling food items like watermelon and coconut water are provided to primates and bears.
Visitors and staff also benefit from 14 RO-equipped water coolers and 30 cold water pot locations. Fire prevention training was conducted recently, with water tankers and fire extinguishers strategically placed throughout the park, demonstrating a 24/7 readiness for emergencies.
