Patna Zoo Welcomes New Arrivals for Breeding Programs
7 Jul
Summary
- Two male gaurs from Karnataka due July 25 to enhance breeding.
- Asiatic lions from Rajgir Zoo Safari are planned additions.
- Rhinoceros transfer from Singapore Zoo is under preliminary discussion.
Patna Zoo is enhancing its animal collection with several new species. By July 25, two male gaurs are expected to arrive from Karnataka, joining the existing two females to establish a healthy breeding population. This move is part of the Central Zoo Authority's animal exchange program.
The zoo also has plans to acquire a pair of Asiatic lions from Rajgir Zoo Safari. Discussions are ongoing, with the final arrangements dependent on the requirements of the Rajgir facility. Currently, Patna Zoo houses two lionesses.
Furthermore, a preliminary proposal is being considered to bring two-horned rhinoceroses from Singapore Zoo. This international transfer, however, is in its early stages due to Singapore Zoo awaiting a female rhinoceros. Patna Zoo might exchange one male one-horned rhino and deer species in return.
These upcoming arrivals follow recent additions, including a white tiger from Delhi Zoo, Shanghai deer, white blackbucks, rosy pelicans, and painted storks. These new animals, except for the white blackbucks, are now viewable by the public.
