Pandas Embark on 8,000-Mile Blind Date to Atlanta
15 May
Summary
- Two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will travel from China to Atlanta.
- The pandas are part of a new 10-year conservation agreement.
- This marks a continuation of panda diplomacy between China and the U.S.

Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are set to travel nearly 8,000 miles from Chengdu, China, to Atlanta as part of a new 10-year conservation pact. The pair, who have never met, will soon depart for their new home at Zoo Atlanta. This initiative continues a long tradition of panda diplomacy between China and the United States.
Zoo Atlanta expressed delight and honor in continuing conservation and research with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. This follows the departure of former resident pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang, who returned to China in 2024 after 25 years in Atlanta. China retains ownership of loaned pandas and their offspring.
Recent panda exchanges, like those sent to San Diego and the Smithsonian's National Zoo in 2024, underscore China's use of pandas as gestures of goodwill. Historically, panda gifting, such as the 1972 gift to the U.S. during President Nixon's visit, has been used to strengthen diplomatic ties.
