4 May
Summary
- Karachi experienced extreme heat, reaching 44°C on Monday.
- Nationwide temperatures are predicted to stay above normal.
- WHO offers guidance to mitigate heat-related health risks.

Karachi, Pakistan's provincial capital, experienced sweltering conditions on Monday, with temperatures soaring to 44°C. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a daily advisory, indicating that very hot and dry weather is expected to continue in the southern parts of the country for the next few days.
According to the PMD's May outlook, mean temperatures are anticipated to remain above normal nationwide. This trend heightens the potential for heat spikes and heatwave conditions, particularly in the plain areas of Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan. Such heat extremes can exacerbate chronic health issues and lead to acute kidney injury, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO also projects an increase in the frequency of extreme heat and heat waves in the coming years due to climate change, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses. The organization provides guidelines for protection, emphasizing staying in cool environments, maintaining hydration, wearing light clothing, and seeking immediate medical help in case of heatstroke.
