Epic butterfly journey: Painted Ladies arrive in force
13 Jun
Summary
- Painted lady butterflies are present in unprecedented numbers this year.
- These butterflies undertake a multigenerational migration from Morocco.
- Their numbers multiply as they breed across Europe en route north.

Wolsingham, Weardale is currently experiencing an exceptional arrival of painted lady butterflies. This year's numbers are remarkable, particularly given their early appearance, a phenomenon that draws parallels to anticipating the first swallow. Sightings in mid-April were reported elsewhere, but the butterflies were first observed in Weardale in mid-May.
The painted lady's journey is legendary, with some individuals reportedly flying directly from Morocco. Most, however, arrive in stages, breeding in France and Spain before continuing north. Their rapid life cycle allows numbers to grow exponentially, creating a rolling, multigenerational wave.
Past mass migrations, like those in 1996 and 2009, are recalled as spectacular events. The future for these butterflies includes leaving two generations of descendants. Interestingly, research since 2012 has revealed they undertake a reverse migration back to Africa. A warming climate may also allow some to overwinter in southern England.
