20 Nov
Summary
- Pennsylvania DEP allocates over $200K to Schuylkill and Luzerne projects.
- Funding aims to improve water quality impacted by nonpoint source pollution.
- Grants support mine drainage treatment and abandoned mine reclamation.

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is investing over $200,000 in two key environmental projects located in Schuylkill and Luzerne Counties. These grants are part of a substantial $3.1 million state funding package aimed at improving water quality across the Commonwealth, with a particular focus on NEPA communities.
The Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management Grants, funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, target pollution stemming from activities like energy resource extraction, agriculture, and urban stormwater runoff. This nonpoint source pollution is a primary culprit, impacting 95% of Pennsylvania's impaired watersheds.
In Schuylkill County, the Schuylkill Conservation District is set to receive $221,600 for a project at the abandoned Pine Forest Shaft, focusing on collecting water quality data and designing a new mine drainage treatment system. Luzerne County's Eastern PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation will receive $260,000 to redevelop a former mining site, supporting research, grant applications, and outreach.
