Overtourism Overwhelms Iconic Peaks: Italy & Switzerland Scramble

Popular tourist destinations in Italy and Switzerland are facing significant overtourism challenges. A recent viral video captured hundreds of tourists waiting in long queues for a shuttle bus in Misurina, Italy, en route to the famed Three Peaks Circuit. This situation, exacerbated by a sunny day following rainy weather, drew criticism online regarding "Instagram tourism."

Local tourism officials in Misurina assert that such scenes are not typical and that current visitor management systems, including car access limits and shuttle buses, generally function well. However, in South Tyrol, a growing sentiment favors stricter regulations. The mayor of Toblach has called for mandatory visitor caps for the Three Peaks, citing estimates of over 13,000 people on peak days, a number deemed unsustainable.

Switzerland is also experiencing similar issues, with destinations like Lauterbrunnen and Lake Seewlisee struggling with overcrowding from day-trippers. These problems lead to traffic congestion, parking difficulties, and strain on local communities and natural resources. In response, the Swiss tourism industry plans a nationwide awareness campaign to promote respectful interactions between tourists and residents, aiming for greater local acceptance of tourism.
