Over 50% of Uttar Pradesh's Polluting Industries Violate Environmental Norms
26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- CPCB report finds over 50% of "operational" Grossly Polluting Industries in Uttar Pradesh non-compliant
- Surprise inspections of 1,370 industries, 36 sewage plants, and 8 effluent plants conducted
- 443 out of 858 operational industries found violating pollution control norms

According to a report submitted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to the National Green Tribunal in September 2025, over 50% of the "operational" Grossly Polluting Industries (GPIs) located across Uttar Pradesh were found to be non-compliant with government-stipulated pollution norms.
In compliance with a July 2025 order from the Allahabad High Court, the CPCB had formed 50 teams to conduct surprise inspections of 1,370 GPIs, 36 sewage treatment plants (STPs), and 8 effluent treatment plants (ETPs) in the state. The inspection reports revealed that out of the 858 operational GPIs, 443 were found to be non-compliant with the pollution control regulations, while 415 were compliant.
The CPCB defines GPIs as industries that discharge effluents into waterbodies and handle hazardous substances or effluents with a Biochemical Oxygen Demand load of 100 Kg per day or more. The findings of the report raise serious concerns about the enforcement of environmental regulations in Uttar Pradesh's industrial sector and the potential impact on the state's water bodies and overall environmental health.
