Oscars Carpet Dumped? The Truth Revealed

A viral TikTok showing dumpsters overflowing with the Oscars red carpet, posted the day after the 2026 ceremony, ignited social media criticism regarding Hollywood's alleged wastefulness. Production assistant Paige Thalia shared her discovery, leading to widespread shock that the prestigious carpet might be discarded after a single use.

However, the situation is more nuanced. Rob Thiess of the California Carpet Stewardship Program confirmed that the carpet was en route to be recycled by Event Carpet Pros Inc. at a Los Angeles facility. The processed material is broken down into pellets, which can then be used to manufacture around 125 different products. The Academy also noted that the Oscars carpet itself is made from recycled materials.

Despite these efforts, the broader entertainment industry struggles with red carpet sustainability. Hundreds of annual Hollywood events often result in discarded carpets, especially those with custom designs, as recycling is not standard practice. CARE actively promotes carpet recycling, with California leading in drop-off sites, but extending these initiatives to Hollywood events remains challenging due to the industry's fragmented nature and focus on production efficiency over waste management.

Alternative solutions proposed include donating carpets to schools or shelters, or storing them for future use, akin to costume departments. Renting carpets is also suggested as a more sustainable option, reducing the need for new materials and constant disposal. Implementing such changes requires additional planning, but addresses the significant environmental impact of carpet waste, which does not biodegrade for millions of years and contributes to landfill volume.
