For more than two decades, André Bauma has committed himself to the care of orphaned mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Virunga National Park. As the head caretaker at the Senkwekwe Center, the world's only sanctuary for these animals, Bauma provides essential nurturing for gorillas orphaned by poaching, conflict, and trafficking.
These infant gorillas, often traumatized and dependent, receive constant attention, including bottle-feeding and medical monitoring. Bauma describes the process as akin to raising children, having developed deep, parental connections with the animals, recognizing their unique personalities and communication.
The Senkwekwe Center is situated within Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich biodiversity, encompassing diverse landscapes and numerous plant and animal species, including endangered mountain gorillas.
However, the park endures significant threats from over two decades of armed conflict, militia activity, illegal mining, and poaching, leading to substantial declines in wildlife populations and the tragic loss of over 140 park rangers since 1996.
The documentary 'Virunga,' released in 2014, brought international attention to Bauma's work and the critical conservation efforts within the park, emphasizing the compassion and trust involved in protecting endangered species.
